Ask any elder in Tamil Nadu about the best time to pray, study or start something new and you will hear the same answer: Brahma Muhurtham (பிரம்ம முகூர்த்தம்). Sages, yogis and Siddhas all rose in these quiet hours before dawn. In this guide we explain what Brahma Muhurtham is, how to find its exact time, what it is believed to give, and how to make waking up early a habit that lasts.

What is Brahma Muhurtham?

A muhurtham is a unit of time of about 48 minutes; a day and a night together hold 30 muhurthams. Brahma Muhurtham, "the time of Brahma, the Creator", is the muhurtham that begins 96 minutes before sunrise and ends 48 minutes before sunrise. The whole period before sunrise is often called Brahma Muhurtham in everyday speech.

How to calculate Brahma Muhurtham time

  1. Find today's sunrise time for your city.
  2. Subtract 96 minutes. That is when Brahma Muhurtham begins.
  3. Subtract 48 minutes from sunrise. That is when it ends.

Example for Chennai: if the sun rises at 6:00 am, Brahma Muhurtham is from 4:24 am to 5:12 am. Because sunrise moves through the year, the time shifts by a few minutes every week.

Why Brahma Muhurtham is special

Ayurveda advises: Brahme muhurte uttishthet swastho rakshartham ayushah, "a healthy person should rise in Brahma Muhurtham to protect their life". Traditional texts describe these hours as sattvic, calm and pure, when the mind is naturally still. People who practise it regularly say they experience:

  • a quieter mind for meditation, prayer and japa;
  • better focus and memory for study;
  • unhurried time for yourself before the day's demands begin;
  • a regular sleep and wake rhythm that leaves them more energetic;
  • a sense of discipline that spreads into the rest of the day.

What to do in Brahma Muhurtham

  1. Wake up gently. Sit up for a minute, rub your palms together and place them over your eyes.
  2. Freshen up. Wash your face, hands and feet, or bathe if you can.
  3. Light a lamp. A single deepam in your pooja room sets the tone.
  4. Breathe. Ten minutes of slow breathing or pranayama.
  5. Meditate or chant. Sit in silence, or chant a mantra on your mala for one round of 108.
  6. Set an intention. Write down one thing you want from the day, or practise gratitude.

Keep your phone away until this practice is done. The first hour shapes the rest of the day.

How to wake up early: a 21 day plan

Most people fail at waking early because they try to change everything overnight. Move gradually instead:

  • Days 1 to 7: wake up 15 minutes earlier than usual, and go to bed 15 minutes earlier. Get morning sunlight.
  • Days 8 to 14: move another 15 to 30 minutes earlier. Finish dinner at least two to three hours before bed and stop screens 30 minutes before sleep.
  • Days 15 to 21: reach your Brahma Muhurtham time. Aim for seven hours of sleep, which means sleeping by about 9:30 pm.

It also helps to practise with others. In our Brahma Muhurta programs, participants wake up together for live morning sessions of meditation and guidance, which makes the habit far easier to keep. See all programs and services.

A note on health

Waking early should never come at the cost of sleep. If you work night shifts, are unwell, pregnant or caring for a baby, adjust the practice to your situation and speak to your doctor if you have any health concerns.
